Summit Group Lunch Table 300ft above Auckland in Sky Tower Restaurant

Tuesday evening we caught Air New Zealand Flight 1 from LA. [This is the view from my seat] . [Jan and Randy Robinson (me and Jan)] sat with Summit Group members [Walter & Lorretta Whitehurst] and right in front of us were Summit Group members [Peter & Ann Marie Regan]. [Steve Bretzke] (also Summit Group member) unfortunately was several rows behind us and we didn't get to see much of him during the flight. But I'm getting ahead of myself with those pictures - they obviously weren't pictures in the plane! I'll tell more about those later in the week.

We crossed the international Date Line and lost Wednesday, March 3rd during the trip.

At the New Zealand airport in Auckland we were all glad to get off the plane. Most of us didn't sleep very much. We arrived at the  [Carlton Hotel], our bags there waiting for us in our room as usual. Watkins takes care of all of the mundane things most travellers have to deal with. The rooms were quite nice!

After visiting our hotel briefly to freshen up, we headed to the Sky Tower revolving restaurant for lunch. [Here's the view of the Sky Tower from the bus] The Sky Tower is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. The food was great. [The Summit Group eating lunch (minus me, taking the picture)]  The beautiful bay and cityscape in the background is not a picture - that was our view! Left to Right - Walter, Steve, Peter, Ann Marie, Loretta, Jan. And here's a few views of the city from up there. [one] [two]

After lunch, we took a tour around town and saw that Auckland is a very picturesque city. [bay with thousands of ships docked] We ended up at the Kelly Tarlson Antarctica museum which was a simulation of an Antarctica camp. It gave us a good idea of how the explorers live when they go to Antarctica. And we saw a habitat with [Penguins] and there was an tunnel under water [underwater tunnel and Shawn Bandick] that we could walk through and could watch sharks, eels, rays, and other ocean creatures close up. Randy watching a manta ray up close That was fascinating! Some of the women had fun putting their faces in a cardboard picture here. That's left to right, Loretta Whitehurst, Lynn Zielke, Dawn Thompson, Jan Robinson.

After the Antarctica adventure, we went back to the room to get ready for Dinner! Watkins took us to The Lodge - a private homestead with beautiful gardens [me and Jan in the gardens], amazing flowers [Jan with Janice Satola with some flowers].   We had a reception [Mark Jacobs talking with Dave and Kim Hurko] and a wonderful New Zealand Dinner.

Stuffed and happy, we head back to the hotel and everybody gets their first good nights sleep.
